American Freedom Defensive Training Institute, AFDIT LOGO 042216AFDTI, was started after I became a pistol instructor certified by the National Rifle Association (The NRA) around 2009.

In short order I came to understand that most people, here in Michigan, who take a CPL Class are poorly prepared  mentally  to carry a pistol, let alone ready to discharge their firearm to defend themselves or their family.

The Need for Ongoing Training

As I began to mature as an instructor and a pistol handler, I found that many (if not most) individuals who were CPL or CCW  holders did not know how to present their pistols from the holster or from concealment. I took the time to look at the various shooIMG_0673ting disciplines that were available here in Michigan and I came to the realization that most were “sports oriented” with the mechanical skills of a sports discipline but few were “defense oriented”, emphasizing the muscle mechanics of tactical defensive shooting. Beretta1I decided that NON BITTER “Clingers” such as myself needed to have ongoing training to develop and keep the muscle memory and mindset necessary to be truly effective in a “real life” defensive situations.

Around 2010, I came across two ABC News shorts that have really helped me to drive the point home that Concealed Pistol Licensees need regular ongoing training. These shorts have an underlying anti-gun bias (and in my opinion the scenarios are a little rigged) BUT I do believe that it points to the very real truth that regular and ongoing training as well as frequent time on the range are extremely important. I say this  based on my own experiences, here in Michigan and where we train out of state. Check out our Gallery Page: ABC Shorts

Defense of yourself and your loved ones is not a privilege. . . It’s a right!

If you are going to exercise your right to carry a pistol whether concealed or openly, knowing how to handle it properly is an honorable RIGHT and RESPONSIBILITY. Training is absolutely necessary to learn and maintain the proper mindset and physical skills in order to handle yourself and your firearm in a “real life” threatening situation.
